The chow was unaware of the gentle lick or even the fact that his mate was awake for quite some time, his gentle snoring filling the air in a soothing manner. Having never slept with someone since his puppyhood, he was completely unaware of it. No one ever told him he snored simply because no one was ever around to hear it. But, the brute's slumber was interrupted suddenly when a strange scent entered his sensitive nares. There was someone outside the comfort of the pick-up cab. The territorial chow sat bolt upright like someone who had just had a bad dream, dark optics focused on the scent source. Though on the outside, he appeared calm if slightly worried, inside his deep fuzzy chest, powerful heart seemed to slam into the sides of his ribcage. Barely a few hours old and his family was already under siege. Well, whoever this intruder was, they were not going to harm Desiree or the pups, not so long as Zeus was breathing...
Standing up swiftly but gently enough as to not wake the little ones, the chow gave his mate a comforting like across th face.
"I'll be right back.. Stay here and protect the pups..."
He was almost sure he didn't need to tell her that but, just in case she got the urge to run out and help him, god forbid, he wanted her to stay here. The pups were their lives now and it was someone's job to keep them safe...

Desiree smelled it too, almost as fast as Zeus her head shot up. She was so alarmed her heart was pounding a mile a minute. She franticly searched through the black light of night but she saw nothing. Then she felt Zues lick her and she heard him tell her to stay here. Yeah right, like she was moving! She would not move more then a meter from her puppies, and probably not even an inch now! Be careful she whispered to his as he left the truck.

Nodding to his mate and glancing back at his pups for what might be the last time, the chow lept from the truck gracefully, keen optics searching the night. It was dark, despite all the light-up billboards and the street lights. It was quiet as well, with the exception of the cool night breeze. But Zeus knew someone... or something, was out here. He could smell its anxiety, but with the wind blowing so strongly, he could not place its location. Trotting a little ways away from the truck, the brute paused once a again as a heavy hubcap fell from a car to his left...
It was a clever distraction. From his right, the direction he was not looking at, a powerful pit bull lept from the shadows, latching onto the back of the powerful chow's head with its jaws. Zeus, though surprised, easily shook the smaller dog off, only to have another attack from the front. He should've known. like he always said: Those that watch their backs are attacked from the front. Growling quickly, broad muzzle grabbed the second dog in mid air, using its momentum to fling it to the ground hard. It hit with a thud, letting out a pathetic yelp as it bounced a few times before sliding to a stop a good twenty feet from where it hit. The first attack took advantage of the momentary distraction, grabbing a hold of the chow's hind leg and pulling him to the ground. a third dog lept from another angle, pinning the white dog to the ground with all his pathetic weight.
But these were all terriers, a good fifty pounds trying to hold a good hundred pounds plus. Grinning, Zeus placed both paws against the terrier's chest and shoved with all his might, throwing the dog off of him and watching smugly as it landed on the one behind it. But while this whole fight occurred a few meters from the truck, a forth pit bull circled around the side of the truck, it's greedy jaws aimed at the puppies. They made tasty snacks for a pack of loners...

Desiree wailed as she heard Zeus fighting then she spoted the Pit trying for her puppies and she growled furiously at him, there was no way she would let some low down mut make a meal of her new puppies. She stood up and snarled and barked and growled doing every thing she could to frighten the Pit off without moving away from the puppies. Zeus! They're after the puppies! She yelled with anger and fright.

Hearing his mate's cry, the chow growled angrily at the pit bulls, making sure they remained here and didn't try and jump him when he turned his back. There was no way they were gonna get his pups. A snowball had a better chance in hell. Rolling to his feet, he dashed toward the truck, the sound of the other pits behind him ringing in his ears. He knew they were gonna try to jump him. Just a few feet from the truck, he whirled about suddenly. He had given them the one chance they would ever get to run away. Now, there was come serious hell to pay. Massive jaws closed on the larger pit's snout, engulfing much of the terrier's head. It squirmed a little in the chow's mouth but a few seemingly merciless shakes left the attacker motionless. The smaller pit immediately turned about and sprinted for the exit.
Dropping the lifeless carcass immediately, Zeus turned back to the more pressing matter, the pit bull by the truck. It was actually in the truck at this point, unafraid of Desiree or Zeus it seemed. Well, not until he came face to face with the angry chow. The terrier was lucky, merely launched out of the other side of the cab with a powerful shove, straight into a large trash pile. Had his mate not been looking, the chow would've killed the intruder, but he didn't want to spill blood around the fae, or his pups for that matter. If everything went his way, they wouldn't catch the scent of blood until they were to be fed fresh meat. One loud threatening "Woof" from the deep chest of the alpha male sent the last of the attackers running, including the one that had been thrown before.
Grinning at his handy work, Zeus turned back to count his pups. Yup, all five, safe and sound.

Desiree had beed fighting the Pit that was in the truck with her while Zeus dealed with the ones out side. She backed off when Zeus came to the recuse. She huddled around the puppies who were now yelping helplessly. The fact that they could not see made then fragle to all the loud noises. She whiggled around till they knew it was there mom who had huddled up with them. They could smell her sweet milky scent and suckle her as soon as they found her belly. Desiree looked at he mate and licked him, Thank you she whispered. Then she laied her head on the seat.

Smiling warmly at his mate, the chow hoped up onto the seat, laying down in front of the leopard dog and beginning to lick and groom her face and ears. The back of his head, where the first dog had bit down, felt a bit wet and cold as the brisk evening breeze blew through the open sides of the vehicle. Probably some slight punctures, nothing to worry about. They didn't even hurt...

Desiree let out a sigh as Zeus licked her face. she looked at her puppies one last time then went to sleep. She was tired after fighting with that Pit Bull. She slept lightly so she could head what was going on around her. Zeus had continued to clean her face, the puppies were makng slight little movments. She opened her eyes and looked at Zeus and at the puppies, they would become big and strong.

The chow stayed awake through the night, keen to all that was around him and his family. Anytime a suspicious sound or smell reached him, the brute would stand immediately, rounded ears perked and dark optics searching for the source. Usually, it was simply a rat or a squirrel. Nothing to cause alarm. So, he'd lay back down and resume grooming his mate lovingly, sometimes poking the nearest puppy with his nose...

There was a low rattle outside the truck and then Desiree heard a low rumble, no not a rumble, a growl! The pit bull that had been fearless of them had come back but with more hungry dogs than before! This time there were four pits including the leader, one, what looked like a large mix breed, and a rottie! She jumped up, making sure not to step on her puppies. She looked around growling, she waited for Zeus to get up to help.

Zeus heard the noise as well, leaping to his feet swiftly and immediately barring his fangs. Just like before, whether there were two dogs or twenty, no one was getting anywhere near his puppies. He simply would not allow it. Growling low in his throat, the chow waited mostly for them to move. With so many of them and only one of him and one of Desiree, he was not about to leave his pups vulnerable like before. last time, they had almost been eaten. Well, not this time. This time, he'd kill every last one of these brutes. Forget about mercy, when your flesh and blood are on the line, there was no such thing as mercy...

Desiree growled as the strays formed a circle aroud the truck, they had obviously thought of a plan. She swung her head around to make sure none were closer then before. Then the rottie jumped at her and at the same time the mut jumped at Zeus. The rottie bowled her over to where she almost smashed her puppies. They let out little squeels of fright as the seat moved with all the weight of the dogs fighting. She lunged at the rottie and bit its forleg, ripping it furiously. The rottie bit at her neck and drew blood, Desiree let out a loud wail/ high pitched scream. She acted more quickly to fling the rottie off, it barked at her but stayed back. She looked around for a new chalenge only to see one of her puppies were missing! She looked around and almost started to cry, ZEUS! MY PUPPIES, ONES MISSING, IT'S BAKLAVA! HE'S GONE! then she spotted the mut that had dared try to steal here puppy. he was trying to exscape, but Desiree wouldn't have it! She leapt from the truck, watch the puppies, I gotta kill this mut! She ran faster then she ever had before and jumped at the mut that carelessly carried her small black puppy away. She knocked him straight to the ground and swiped up her puppy she set him a little farther away and bit at the mut as hard she could. She was gonna show him no mercy, he was crowfood now. She ripped in all directions and bit at him, she ripped one of his ear almost all the way off. When she let him go, she had blood on her paws. She picked up Baklava and took him back to the truck. They were going to need a new home, and soon, but first they had to get rid of the other dogs. She had stunded the rottie, who now was running off after seeing Desiree kill the mut, that left the pit bull, there were only two left, most had gotten sceared and ran off.

When the mutt lept at him, the chow lept himself but not at his opponent, but rather straight up into the air. The mutt landed beneath him and all hundred and something pounds of chow chow landed on him, snapping the dog's neck based upon where Zeus placed his paws. The mutt fell silent, and a few of his friends changed their minds about attacking. A good number of them left, but one happened to be leaving with a pup in his maw. With a malicious growl, the chow was about to chase the culprit but let his mate do it for him. There was one problem now though, he was alone and there were still four or five dogs around the truck. They lept at him from both sides of the truck, teaming up on the larger brute to try and drag him away from the puppies but the diligent male would have none of it. He would deal with one dog, and when his friend bit down on some fleshy part of his body, he'd shake that one off and take out its throat. Every dog that entered the truck was killed... all but one. With literally four dogs on his back and one biting his face, the chow couldn't see for a few precious moments, giving a sleek-looking greyhound mix to grab a hold of the white puppy Balthazar and make off with him silently. But, once all the dogs were dead and their bodies were cleared from the truck, Zeus went back to his offspring, counting them with a poke of his nose and trying not to get any of the blood streaming down his body anywhere near them. One was missing... ((All part of my little plot with Balthazar. See, he's gonna go missing for a few months and then, with help from anothr player, he'll find his way back but.. well, something'll happen along the way. You'll see the rest as it happens... ))

Desiree looked at her puppies, she eyed them and put down Baklava, something was wrong with this picture. Wait, where was Balthazar!? She stared around worried that one of the mutts had gotten off with some prize. He was nowhere in sight. She wailed when she saw him nowhere in the truck. She jumped out and looked around, she crawled under cars and out and looked around. She still saw him nowhere. She stopped and sighed, then she walked back to the truck and jumped in, her puppies wanted her. She curled up let her puppies suckle, but while they did Desiree cried, she had lost her first puppy and was very sad. She looked to Zeus for comfort.

Zeus, having been already in the truck and counting, was the first to notice his son's disappearance. Growling to himself for letting such harm befall not only one of his children but one of the males that were to inherit his land. He was upset, despite the fact that he knew Balthazar was probably going to have some hearing problems, being white and all, and that he was the submissive pup of the five. The young whelp was everything Zeus was not expecting his son to be... but he was still his son. Sighing softly and at a loss for words just looked to his mate sadly...
